José Mourinho gave a warm speech after Real Madrid's 2-1 victory over Espanyol. In his interview, Mourinho emphasized that Madrid deserved to win but the Spaniard also showed their quality. "We deserve to win and Espanyol don't deserve to lose," Mourinho said at the start of his press conference. Mourinho drew attention to what is becoming a pattern in the treatment of Vinicius Junior—an issue that has long been noted by La Liga watchers. "Vini is not a saint, but too much is being done to him. It is alarming that there seems to be a system of repeatedly challenging him physically. After one player, others will follow," Mourinho said. He added, "At a time when anti-bullying is being focused on, it seems that it doesn't cover Vini, whether as a competitor or a spectator." The coach emphasized that it is important for the team to prepare Vinicius—physically and mentally—to withstand such challenges week after week. Moreover, Mourinho paid tribute to the contribution of the Real Madrid bench in the match. He said their support and positive participation was a big thing, which was also the key to their success.

Mourinho also praised Jude Bellingham who, although he had doubts at first, proved that he is strong—physically and mentally—who immediately got Madrid's game moving. "I was hesitant to put him in the starting XI, but he showed that he is ready, both physically and mentally," said Mourinho. Mourinho also shared his excitement for new-look Carlos Espí, who he says is already with him at Valdebebas and will begin to be formally introduced as part of the team. He cited the thorough process Madrid went through in selecting Espí as the right profile to help their team's perceived needs, especially after Gonzalo's move to Fulham. This victory of Real Madrid against Espanyol shows the depth of character and strength of the group, as well as the new elements that can strengthen their campaign this La Liga season. Above all, Mourinho's press conference made it clear that the welfare of each player is important to them, especially Vinicius, who needs to be given proper protection from unfair treatment by others.

What's next

In the future, Real Madrid are expected to continue their efforts to maintain their good run in La Liga. The support from the bench and the physical and mental preparation of Vinicius will be key to their success in the next matches.
