His performance highlighted his potential as a key player for Cardiff City, particularly his ability to get into the penalty area and convert chances into goals. His experience at youth international level brings added value to his development in senior football.

Why it matters

Rob Tankiewicz's fine pre-season performance against Cork City has provided a positive outlook for Cardiff City. His two goals not only underscored his potential but also the team's need to find young talent to help their season outlook. Under the guidance of coach Brian Barry-Murphy, it is expected that youngsters like Tankiewicz will be an important part of their development next season.

Key Points

• Cardiff Youth Tankiewicz, Praised by Coach Barry-Murphy.
• After a pre-season display against Cork City, Cardiff City manager Brian Barry-Murphy reiterated the need for Rob Tankiewicz to work harder to maintain and improve his development as a young team player.
• Rising star Tankiewicz knows he must work hard - Barry-Murphy.

Despite his young age, Cardiff City coach Brian Barry-Murphy continues to remind Rob Tankiewicz that more needs to be done to reach the desired level in senior football. Barry-Murphy praised the 17-year-old midfielder after his two quick-fire goals in a friendly against Cork City that ended in an emphatic 6-1 win for the Bluebirds. Tankiewicz, a Wales youth international, temporarily became the youngest player to appear for Cardiff City last season, aged 16 years and 117 days. But he was immediately surpassed by his teammate, Axel Donczew, who was younger at the age of 15 years and 234 days and also debuted in the same match 64 minutes later. Despite this, Tankiewicz continued to prove his mettle after making another senior appearance against Northampton in April, and has now regained the club's interest in pre-season. According to Barry-Murphy, Tankiewicz shows the right attitude and instincts as a midfielder who knows when to enter the penalty area and convert chances into goals. The coach added that the young player needs constant guidance, especially and he needs to learn when it is most important to help the offense and how his attack will be more effective.

"His mentality is very important. He knows he still has a lot to go through and learn to become the full player we want to get from him," Barry-Murphy told Cardiff's official website. After making two new senior appearances and a hot pre-season performance, Tankiewicz signed a professional contract with Cardiff in June. The club has yet to release the details or length of his contract, but the management's confidence in Tankiewicz as part of the Bluebirds' new generation of young talent is clear. As the start of the new season approaches, Cardiff City fans will be hoping to see more of Tankiewicz's rise to the senior squad. Although still young, his pre-season campaigns show that he has the potential to be a key pillar of the team amid their fight for greater success, not only in the league but also in the upcoming competitions. Tankiewicz's future will certainly be a focus not only for Cardiff City but also for football fans in Wales and around the world, especially as he is part of a growing new generation of players ready to test at a higher level.

What's next

In the coming weeks, Barry-Murphy is expected to keep an eye on Tankiewicz as he plans his role in the senior squad. His development could have a bigger match impact in the coming matches, especially if he continues to show his prowess in the pre-season. Additionally, the emergence of Axel Donczew as another young talent could provide even more depth to Cardiff City's midfield.
