Key Points

• Kennet Eichhorn, 16-year-old Star of Hertha BSC, Rejected.
• One of Germany's hottest young talents, Hertha BSC's Kennet Eichhorn, has turned down strong interest from Liverpool and Ajax to move to Bayer Leverkusen.
• Kennet Eichhorn remains central to Hertha BSC's plans.

Hertha BSC's under-watched young midfielder Kennet Eichhorn has decided to stay in Germany despite strong urging from one of England's most prestigious teams, Liverpool, and the voice of Dutch giants Ajax. Instead of accepting big offers and opportunities from outside the country, he formally chose Bayer Leverkusen, one of the top teams in the Bundesliga, as the next step in his career. Reports surfaced last week that Liverpool were seriously courting him after noticing his spark in his first year as a professional at Hertha BSC in the Bundesliga's second division. Eichhorn featured in almost nineteen (19) matches during the season, which is why he was immediately noticed by big names in Europe. But according to reports from Germany, Eichhorn wants to gain more experience in his own country before stepping into the heavier pressure of another league. Besides Liverpool, Ajax has also shown interest, but Liverpool has been more aggressive, willing to spend a large sum compared to offers from the Bundesliga. However, money was not the basis of Eichhorn's decision. His desire is to continue developing as a player in the familiar environment of the Bundesliga.

One of the perceived reasons for his move was the presence of his former Hertha youth coach Kostas Kostifakos, who was recently assigned to Leverkusen. The former coach was a great help to Eichhorn in the early stages of his career. Moreover, the newly appointed head coach of Bayer Leverkusen, Carles Martínez, is also making changes to further strengthen the team in the upcoming season. Martínez replaces Kasper Hjulmand who resigned after one year. Eichhorn will continue his training and playing as a central midfielder at Leverkusen, rather than immediately trying the higher levels in other European leagues. The total transfer fee from Hertha BSC is estimated at nine million euros. The move shows the young player's dedication to continuing to hone his talent—a choice that immediately garnered respect from the German football community. It shows that while there is plenty of glitz in the Premier League and other leagues, there are German youngsters who prioritize personal development and the right timing of a move for their long-term success.

What's next

Now that Eichhorn is part of Bayer Leverkusen, he is expected to be seen at a higher level of competition in the Bundesliga. His former youth coach Kostas Kostifakos can provide valuable guidance on his development. In his new surroundings, Eichhorn can gain the necessary experience and exposure to be better prepared for the future, especially if offers from top European clubs arise again.
