French top-flight runners-up Lens have officially signed Maik Nawrocki from Celtic, according to the club's announcement, which emphasized that the 25-year-old central player is a "perfect fit" for their three-man central defence. Lens sporting director Jean-Louis Leca announced on the club's website that Nawrocki is a tough and unyielding defender who understands the need to play in the back three and is comfortable on the ball. Leca said he brings athleticism and aerial power, and still has plenty of room for development under the Lens coaching staff. Prior to this move, Nawrocki came to Celtic where he was bought from Legia Warsaw in 2023. While at Celtic, he played 18 times—12 of which were starts—and his last appearance for the Glasgow club was in a 5–1 win against Aberdeen in May 2025 where he also scored his only goal for the team. Last season, Nawrocki was loaned to Hannover 96 and helped the team finish fourth in Germany's second tier, which was an important part of his competitive experience and immersion in different styles of football.

According to the report, Nawrocki is not part of Celtic manager Martin O'Neill's plans for the future of the squad, so the two clubs have agreed for his permanent departure and move to Lens. The parties did not disclose contract details or fees to the public. For Lens, who have been enjoying recent success as one of the top teams in Ligue 1, the signing of Nawrocki is a clear step to strengthen the center of the defense—specifically in their system that uses three central defenses. The combination of physicality, aerial ability, and confidence in moving the ball was cited by the sporting director as the reason why they saw him fit the team's style of play. Nawrocki, on the other hand, has experience at international youth level as a former Poland Under-21 representative, and this move aims to give him more regular playing time and the opportunity to develop further in a team that has a clear system for his position. The signing of Maik Nawrocki is another example of the activity in the transfer market this offseason with European clubs sorting out their defensive options before the start of the new season. For Lens, he is expected to add more assurance and competition to the defense as the team aim to maintain their position at the top of the French league. Image credit: media provided by source.

What's next

Nawrocki is expected to be a key part of Lens' defensive lineup this coming season, aiming to achieve a higher position in Ligue 1. His training under Lens' coaching staff could open up new opportunities for his development as a player. Meanwhile, Celtic may look for new players to fill the gap left by Nawrocki, which could affect their season outlook in the Scottish Premiership.
