Context

Rodri, who currently plays for Manchester City, has been Real Madrid's main target as a replacement for Toni Kroos. His experience in the Premier League and success in the FIFA World Cup 2026 have increased his value in the transfer market, underscoring his potential to become the next star in Madrid's midfield.

Why it matters

Rodri's possible move to Real Madrid could cause major changes in the La Liga club's midfield. As a skilled defensive midfielder, he can help build the attack and protect the defense, which is important in Madrid's system. His move could allow for deeper player development and a stronger midfield presence in the future.

Key Points

• L'Équipe revealed: Rodri's possible €60m transfer to.
• L'Équipe report: Real Madrid target Manchester City's Rodri for €60m in exchange for Toni Kroos, while Enzo Fernández is also listed as an alternative.
• L'Équipe revealed the sum of the potential transfer of Rodri to «Real».

According to L'Équipe, Real Madrid are focused on a possible €60 million move for Rodri from Manchester City. "Los Blancos" reportedly see the Spanish defensive midfielder as an ideal replacement for Toni Kroos, who ended his professional career a year ago. Madrid are willing to shell out an amount higher than the estimated market value even though Rodri still has one year left on his contract at the Etihad, according to the report. The said newspaper also mentioned that Rodri has made no secret of his desire to return to the Spanish capital—his former home when he was still playing for Atletico Madrid before moving to the Premier League. Last season, he made 33 appearances in all competitions for City and scored two goals. The report added that Rodri won the FIFA World Cup 2026 and was recognized as the best player of the tournament, making him even more of a premium target in the market. Currently, Rodri's market value is estimated at €55 million according to the portal Transfermarkt. That's why the rumored €60m offer stands out: it indicates Real Madrid's willingness to pay a premium for an experienced anchor in the middle who can dictate the flow of the game, shield the defense and start an attack from the back. Rodri has also long been known for his positional control, timing of cuts, and calm circulation of the ball—traits vital to Madrid's central system.

If talks for Rodri don't work out, Chelsea's Enzo Fernández is listed as Madrid's alternative target, according to the report. Enzo's style as a deep-lying playmaker is also compatible with the team's needs, especially in the search for a long-term solution in midfield after Kroos' departure. For Manchester City, any potential departure of Rodri is a huge hole in the team's framework, as he is often the center of balance and protection in front of the defense. However, it is clear that this matter is still at the level of reports: there has been no official confirmation from Real Madrid, Manchester City, or Rodri's camp. As speculation swirls, observers will be focused on whether Madrid's interest will continue in formal negotiations. If the deal goes through, the €60m fee would be one of the biggest moves of the summer for the central position—and potentially cause a domino effect in the market, especially if City need to find a replacement for the key role Rodri is leaving.

What's next

Real Madrid are expected to be active in the summer transfer window to complete Rodri's move. If the deal goes through, the dynamics of Madrid's midfield could change, as they aim to maintain their status in La Liga football. The next few weeks will be critical as fans and pundits continue to watch moves in the transfer market.
