Context

João Gomes, a 25-year-old Brazilian midfielder, was an integral part of Wolverhampton last season, where he played 41 matches and contributed one goal and three assists. Why it matters

Liverpool's interest in João Gomes shows their commitment to strengthening their midfield, which is vital for their success in Premier League football. The drop in the player's price has allowed greater opportunities for Premier League clubs to compete for his services. With his qualities as an industrious and aggressive midfielder, Gomes could be a great asset to any team that acquires him.

Liverpool have continued to monitor Wolverhampton's 25-year-old Brazilian midfielder João Gomes in the current summer transfer window, Football Insider reports. According to the said source, the player's estimated price has dropped to around £30 million (approx. €35 million) from earlier estimates of closer to £40 million (€47 million). The team from Merseyside is not the only one in line. Also in the race are Manchester United, who have reportedly held preliminary talks with Wolverhampton's board over a possible move for Gomes. Although no formal offer has been mentioned so far, these moves show that there is serious interest from the two Premier League giants. In the previous season 2025/26, Gomes played 41 matches in all competitions for Wolves, recording one goal and three assists. Known as an industrious and aggressive midfielder, his range through the middle, ability to cut a bruise, and defensive discipline are attributes that clubs looking for energy and balance in midfield may be looking at.

For Liverpool, targeting Gomes fits in with the continued tweaking of their midfield focused on high intensity and quick transitions. The added depth and presence in the middle will help in a long campaign in the league and cups. Meanwhile, for Manchester United, the prospect of a dynamic and hard-working player in the middle is compatible with the need to strengthen the control of the midfield and increase the defensive protection in front of the backline. Wolverhampton's perspective is also important to consider. In the face of interest from big clubs and the revised price estimate, Wolves will have to weigh up whether it would be better to cash in on the asset now or retain a key piece in their system. However, there is no indication from the report whether they are open to an immediate sale or waiting for a higher offer. As the rumors swirl, João Gomes remains the center of attention in the Premier League market this summer. According to Football Insider, negotiations will continue for the next few days, and it is possible that any club could speed up the move if there is price competition. Stay tuned for further updates on the potential transaction that could affect the midfield balance of the two top-six teams.

What's next

Talks between Liverpool and Wolverhampton are expected to continue as the summer transfer window approaches. Manchester United don't seem to be giving up either, showing serious interest in Gomes, which could bring increased competition for his transfer. The next few weeks will be critical in developing possible offers and negotiations for the Brazilian midfielder.
