Liverpool seriously considering signing Fikayo Tomori from AC

By Sports.

Why it matters

The signing of Fikayo Tomori could be crucial for Liverpool in their bid to strengthen the defense amid ongoing injury issues and departures of key players. His Premier League experience and ability to adapt to the game could provide much-needed support to Virgil van Dijk, who is currently carrying the weight of the defense alone. In this context, signing Tomori seems like a practical move for Liverpool.

It seems that Liverpool are not holding back when it comes to strengthening their defense this off-season. According to reports from Italy, particularly in Tutto Juve, Liverpool have begun to inquire about how the possible acquisition of Fikayo Tomori from AC Milan could be carried out before the transfer window deadline. Liverpool don't need more drama about their central defense—the problem is obvious. Ibrahima Konate has left and moved to Real Madrid after his contract expired, while Joe Gomez is unlikely to start next season due to injury. In this situation, it is expected that Virgil van Dijk will not be able to single-handedly lift the entire team's defense for a long time. For Andoni Iraola, Liverpool's new coach after Arne Slot was sacked in May, the focus is clearly on defence. Tomori is not considered a "superstar signing", but he has extensive experience in the Premier League while at Chelsea, and his defense is solid and he adapts to the game quickly. At the moment, Liverpool need the confidence of a guaranteed defender more than the coveted gimmick or star.

A big reason for the immediate interest is Tomori's contract situation, which is due to expire in 12 months. Usually, teams become more practical when a player's contract is about to expire so that he doesn't disappear for free. So Milan could be open to selling him if the right amount is available—and that's where Liverpool come in trying to figure out if the cost is affordable and worth it. This is not yet an advanced stage of negotiations, but top clubs often do this market assessment. Liverpool has a few more young defenders like Jeremy Jacquet and Giovanni Leoni (still recovering from injury) but the coaching staff knows that their development should not be rushed, especially as it is difficult for rookies to suddenly join a team with high expectations. Tomori has six caps for England and was included in Thomas Tuchel's pool for the World Cup. He's a respected player at the international level—not a headline-grabber, he's trustworthy. At the moment, what Liverpool need is not what everyone is talking about, but a defense that is proper and reliable. The question now is: are Liverpool really serious about carrying out this transfer, or are they just fantasizing? If they wait any longer, the market may become more expensive and more difficult. While he may not be the superstar that some fans dream of, Tomori is the kind of practical signing who can provide points for Liverpool all season—a solid and reliable defense for Van Dijk and the entire team.

What's next

Talks between Liverpool and AC Milan are expected to continue as the summer transfer window deadline approaches. If negotiations go well, Liverpool could sign Tomori as part of their player development and squad strengthening plan. His arrival could be the key to rebuilding a solid defense for Premier League football next season.
