• Louie Barry remains central to Aston Villa's plans.

Aston Villa's Louie Barry is heading into the next chapter of his career after Sheffield Wednesday entered into advanced negotiations for his transfer. According to the report, the transfer fee has not been finalized but both camps are hoping to finalize an agreement in the coming days. If realized, Barry would become the second Aston Villa academy player to move to Sheffield Wednesday this transfer window, following the signing of defender Sil Swinkels last week. In addition, Wednesday are currently rebuilding after their relegation from League One, the third tier of English football. They also recently acquired England U17 international Harry Gray from Leeds United on loan. Barry rejoined Aston Villa's pre-season training on 26 June alongside other loan players. Around twenty-four players have already returned, ahead of Villa's senior team, to match the schedule of teams in the English Football League who have also started to prepare.

After an injury-plagued season, Barry returned to Stockport County in January where he has played twice before. He is known to be one of the higher earners at Aston Villa, which is why it was difficult for him to make a permanent move. He was not part of coach Unai Emery's plans, but he still renewed his contract in early 2025 following his impressive return to Stockport — a move to preserve market value. However, his injuries during his stints at Hull City and Sheffield United were consecutive, causing his transfer value to decrease. Barry developed his talent from the West Bromwich Albion academy and even had a year as part of Barcelona's prestigious La Masia. He also participated in teams Ipswich Town, Swindon Town, MK Dons, and Salford City. He made just one senior appearance for Aston Villa, but promptly scored a goal against Liverpool in the FA Cup in 2021. Sheffield Wednesday are now pushing ahead with their squad overhaul and Louie Barry could be a key addition to their League One campaign. Talks are ongoing to finalize the deal this summer transfer window.

What's next

If the transfer goes through, Barry is expected to be playing in League One football next season, where he will be an integral part of Sheffield Wednesday's rebuilding process. His move could also open the door for other players from the Aston Villa academy to seek more opportunities in the lower leagues. In the coming days, negotiations between the two clubs will continue to be monitored as all parties hope to reach an agreement.
