Context

Youssef Chermiti, a 22-year-old striker, moved to Glasgow Rangers from Everton last summer and has risen rapidly in his career in the Scottish Premiership. With his 15 goals and 5 assists in 41 games, he has become a key target for European teams, including Olympique Lyonnais who are looking for a new striker to bolster their Ligue 1 attack.

Why it matters

Youssef Chermiti's situation highlights the challenges facing Olympique Lyonnais in their search for a new striker in the summer transfer window. The inadequate offer of €20m makes it necessary for Lyon to reassess their transfer market strategy, especially in the face of stiff competition from Glasgow Rangers who are determined to keep hold of their young talent. Chermiti's progress in the Scottish Premiership has underlined his value as a promising midfield signing who could be vital to any team's future.

Key Points

Olympique Lyonnais continues to search for a new centre-back and on their list is Youssef Chermiti of Glasgow Rangers. According to a report by Foot Mercato, Lyon and Rangers have already held talks over a potential transfer of the Portugal U21 striker, but it seems the Ligue 1 side have been dealt an early blow: the €20m OL were expecting to make a move to Rangers was not enough. Chermiti, 22, moved to Ibrox from Everton last summer for around €8m. He quickly established himself in Scotland, notching 15 goals and 5 assists in 41 games in all competitions — production that increased his market value and allowed him to become a prime target for European teams looking for a young number nine. Despite Lyon's interest, the report makes it clear that Rangers are determined to keep hold of their young centre-back this summer. This suggests that unless a more attractive offer comes along, Chermiti will remain an integral part of the Scotland team's attack. It's also natural that the starting price would be higher for a productive U21 international with age and rising potential.

For Lyon, the news that €20m is not enough indicates a possible change in transfer strategy. OL may still try to raise the proposal, or find an alternative in the market. In the same report, it was mentioned that another name on Lyon's radar is Hearts' Claudio Braga, 26, as a possible fallback option if Chermiti's move does not go through. This situation is typical of market clashes: a productive young striker with international experience at the youth level and fresh energy after the first full season in the new league. For the Rangers, the tight position is logical: it is difficult to replace a double-figure scorer in the middle of preparations for the new season. As for Lyon, a balanced move is important — evaluating whether it's worth pushing for a higher offer or focusing on a more affordable target. For now, it remains to be seen whether Lyon will continue their aggressive pursuit of Chermiti. But it is clear: if OL want to bring the Portugal U21 striker to Ligue 1, they will have to cross the threshold observed by Rangers and lay down an offer that cannot be refused.

What's next

Despite the disappointment of their first offer, Lyon may try to raise their bid for Chermiti or move on to another target in the transfer market. Interest in other players such as Hearts' Claudio Braga shows that OL have alternatives in mind as they continue their search for an effective striker. Lyon's next steps could affect their position in Ligue 1 football and their overall player development plan.
