Such matches contribute to building confidence and understanding within the team.

Key Points

• Man City failed in the penalty against Inter in Enzo Maresca's debut; 1-1.
• Enzo Maresca's first match as Manchester City coach ended in a 1-1 draw against Inter Milan in Hong Kong, before City conceded on penalties.
• Man City fire blanks in shootout defeat but McAidoo stars.

Manchester City lost a penalty shootout against Inter Milan after a 1-1 draw in a pre-season match in Hong Kong, in Enzo Maresca's first outing as new coach. Maresca took over from Pep Guardiola this summer, and his side opened the scoring early when Divin Mubama headed home from close range in the 14th minute. Six minutes later, Inter hit back through Benjamin Pavard to tie the score, and remained scoreless until the end of the hour. Although the penalty shootout led to the night, the result of such matches is usually not looked at too much in the build-up period. More important for both sides is rhythm, conditioning, and honing combinations before rushing back into their league. For Maresca, it's an important first look at his team under new leadership, and an opportunity to apply basic principles within the game. In the first period, City started aggressively and Mubama scored quickly from across the goal, an indication of the early intention to control the match. But it wasn't long before Inter found an opening, Pavard was the answer to bring the score back to level. In the second half, both teams tried to find the winning goal, but it all came down to defensive discipline and more thorough ball turnover than clear-cut chances.

When it came to the penalty, that's when fate finally favored the Italian side. Although the details are limited, it is clear that City lacked accurate finishing from 12 yards—an aspect that could easily be corrected in the coming days of training. For City, it serves as the starting point for the journey under Maresca. The momentum, the players' commitment, and adapting to the demands of the new management are valued more than the score listed. Meanwhile, for Inter, it was a solid rehearsal against a fellow strong side, helping them prepare for the upcoming campaign. All in all, while the result was tinged with disappointment, City can take many positive lessons from the match in Hong Kong—from getting up the score early to how to deal with the opposition's elegant response—as the pre-season grind continues.

What's next

In the coming weeks, Manchester City are expected to continue to work together to improve their game ahead of the start of the Premier League. Maresca's new tactics may be tested in the next friendly matches, which are important for their season outlook. The results of such matches are not only for current but also for future league matches and European competitions.
