Middlesbrough have completed the signing of Manchester United goalkeeper Radek Vitek for an undisclosed fee, the club have confirmed. The 22-year-old Czech is coming off a strong campaign in the Championship last season, where he played 41 matches for Bristol City under a loan deal. He is Boro's seventh recruit of the summer—a clear indication of the team's ambition to return to the Premier League as soon as possible. "This is a very impressive project because the ambition is clear and where the club wants to go," Vitek told Middlesbrough's official website (translated). "There is definitely a mission we want to achieve: to get back to the Premier League. Everyone at the club is committed to that, and so am I." The Teessiders showed early confidence as they opened their season with a 1-0 win over Wrexham in the Carabao Cup on Friday. As Boro continue to build strength, Vitek is seen as an integral part of the rotation at the back—adding height, reaction and Championship experience, albeit young, based on his extensive minutes played at Bristol City.

Middlesbrough are set for their Championship opener in front of their own supporters against Lincoln City on Saturday, and it is possible that Vitek will see his first minutes in the new team. Middlesbrough did not disclose the length of the contract the goalkeeper signed. For Boro, the addition of Vitek is another step to strengthen the foundation in defense as they head into a long and challenging Championship campaign. This division is known in England as a marathon with 46 league matches, with the first two places automatically going up to the Premier League and the next four going through the play-offs. In this context, depth and quality at every position—especially at goaltender—are important to maintain consistency from spring to summer. For Vitek, the move from Manchester United's academy and system to an ambitious project at the Riverside was a chance to establish himself as a key keeper. His previous experience at Bristol City—with 41 league matches—is proof that he can handle responsibility at Championship level. Under the new environment and support provided by Middlesbrough, he aims to translate the lessons from last season into stronger form this year. As Boro supporters await the official debut of their new keeper, the message is clear: the team continues to build, the goal is clear, and they are determined to push for a return to the highest level of English football.

What's next

Vitek is expected to make his debut in their opening Championship match against Lincoln City. His entry into the team could improve Middlesbrough's season outlook, especially in their aim to secure promotion. The next matches in the Championship and Carabao Cup will be important to test his ability and Boro's new forces.
