Mourinho: 'Doubt' was seen so Rodri chose

Why it matters

Rodri's decision to choose Barcelona over Real Madrid had a major impact on his career and the strategies of both La Liga clubs. In a league where the confidence and dedication of players is crucial, the 'doubt' noted by Mourinho could indicate a deeper issue with the acquisition of top talent. Such decisions prompt teams to review their projects and their ability to attract elite players to La Liga football.

Key Points

  • Mourinho: 'Doubt' was seen so Rodri chose.
  • José Mourinho said he and Rodri had talks about a potential move to Real Madrid, but because of the 'doubt' he noticed, the midfielder ended up in Barcelona instead of Madrid.
  • Mou: 'Doubts' made Rodri pick Barça over Madrid.
José Mourinho shared that he had a direct conversation with Rodri about the possibility of the Spanish midfielder joining Real Madrid, but it all went in a different direction. According to the veteran coach, he saw 'doubts' in Rodri—who was named the best player of the World Cup 2026—so the midfielder ultimately opted to sign for Barcelona instead of Los Blancos. Mourinho did not give lengthy details about said talks, but the point is clear: in major transactions between Spain's giant rivals, the player's full belief in the team's project is essential. When there is doubt, it immediately becomes a red flag at the top clubs, especially when it comes to Real Madrid and Barcelona who are known for their high standards and high expectations of new signings. For Rodri, who has played such an important role on the world stage and has been recognized as the standout of the World Cup 2026, it is only natural that he will be the center of attention of Europe's elite teams. At this level, it's not just talent and stats that are looked at—it's also mentality, confidence, and the willingness to embrace the pressure of the biggest matches. According to Mourinho, the certainty he felt from the player for a possible transfer to the Bernabéu did not reach the expected level. On the other hand, Rodri's decision to choose Barcelona proves that apart from the team's tactical fit and plan, the clear direction offered by the Catalan club may also have helped. Such a decision is usually based on a combination of the system the coach runs, role to be played in the midfield, and long-term career path. For a player at the peak of his form, project confidence becomes the difference between two competing routes. In the context of longtime rivals Real Madrid and Barcelona, it's rare that one has a target end up in the other camp—but it's nothing new. With every clash in the market, the narrative of El Clásico is reinforced, not only on the pitch but also off it—in negotiations, team plans, and the formation of a midfield that will hold the tempo for years to come. Although the complete course of the negotiations was not detailed, Mourinho's statement sheds light on how delicate the process is when involved is a midfielder with weight and influence like Rodri. A look of 'doubt'—according to the veteran coach—is enough to change the direction of a major transaction. In the end, the result was clear: instead of going to Madrid, the star of the World Cup 2026 went to Barcelona, and it was a new chapter in the never-ending rivalry between the two Spanish giants.

What's next

Given Rodri's choice to join Barcelona, the dynamics in La Liga's midfield may change, especially with the team's new strategies. Real Madrid, known for their ambitions, may look for another target to strengthen their lineup. On the other hand, Barcelona will certainly benefit from the experience and talent of Rodri, who is expected to be an important part of their future plan.
