From Russo to Shpendi: Serie B stars

According to Tuttomercatoweb.

Context

Raffaele Russo, a 26-year-old player, has been an integral part of Avellino in Serie B. After an injury in 2023, he continued to develop under the leadership of Giorgio Perinetti, who gave him confidence. His current form has underlined his value in the transfer market, prompting Serie A clubs to look at him as a possible future signing.

Why it matters

The rise of Raffaele Russo at Avellino shows the potential for Serie B players to attract attention in the transfer market. His recent performances, including four goals and two assists in seven games, have highlighted his ability to keep up with higher levels of football. During the summer transfer window, Serie A clubs will certainly be eyeing him as a potential midfield signing.

Key Points

• From Russo to Shpendi: stars of Serie B.
• Serie B as a hotbed of talent: Raffaele Russo, Cristian Shpendi, Daniel Mosquera, Matteo Tramoni and Pietro Saio are at the center of transfer talks as Italian clubs intensify their monitoring.
• Da Russo a Shpendi, chi è già e chi può essere uomo mercato.

Italy's Serie B is once again proving to be a reservoir of talent and heading straight into Serie A—if not through promotion, then in the transfer market. As the next few windows approach, clubs' surveillance of emerging players intensifies, and some of the buzziest names today come from various second division teams. Raffaele Russo, who is at the right age (1997) for the big step, shines the most in Avellino. After the injury in 2023, he rested and matured in Irpinia with the help of trust from Giorgio Perinetti and his contract was extended. Last season, Davide Ballardini gave him the right amount of trust and he responded with goals and strong performances that took the team to the playoffs. This season, in just seven games, Russo has four goals and two assists—stats enough to ignite the market's interest. His agent Gianni Pascale had a hot line; it is hard to expect Avellino to let him go in January, but in the summer, the temptation for bigger offers will be stronger. At Cesena, Cristian Shpendi continues to bring goals and smiles to the supporters. According to reports, ds Cristian Botturi felt premature and wanted to bring him to Cremonese, but when Bonazzoli stayed, the plan changed. Shpendi remains at Cesena with a clear target: rack up goals and, with luck, open the door to Serie A. He also looks similar in rhythm to Mantova's Ruocco (class of 2001), who has been finding the net regularly and is currently being monitored by clubs such as Genoa.

As for Daniel Mosquera, this may be the person who will set the true direction of his career. Last year at Verona under Zanetti, he started well before falling short of consistency. A full campaign in Serie B could give him mature experience before stepping up to the top level again. The confidence he carries is not small: he is an "intuition" of Sean Sogliano, and the current sports director of Hellas Verona rarely misses a choice—he just has to know how to wait. In Tuscany, the Pisa attack recovered again with the help of Matteo Tramoni. In January, he would have wanted to leave and Palermo were said to be interested, but now he has regained his place on the stage at the Arena Garibaldi and the ambition is clear: to return to Serie A. In defence, Benevento's Pietro Saio is emerging, a central defender born in 2003. Cagliari and Frosinone are on his trail—paths to watch as scouting intensifies. It's still early, the wind of the transfer to Italy is already felt. When it comes to spotting talent and rapid rise, Serie B is no slouch. The market is alive and kicking, and as young upstarts get more minutes, so does the influx of clubs ready to bet on Serie A's next star.

What's next

As Russo continues to develop, interest from Serie A clubs is expected to increase in the next summer transfer window. His agent, Gianni Pascale, has an active line of communication with potential buyers, and it could be difficult for Avellino to keep him if bigger offers come. On the other hand, Avellino supporters are hoping to see Russo still in their team as they fight for promotion to Serie A.
