Hope Regained: Trevoh Chalobah, England's New Strength at World Cup 2026

Chelsea defender Trevoh Chalobah, last called up by Coach Thomas Tuchel, recounted the emotional experience when he was included in the England squad for the World Cup 2026 as a replacement for Tino Livramento.

From New York, Trevoh Chalobah quickly ended his vacation when he received a call from Thomas Tuchel—a call he had long dreamed of. Due to the injury of Newcastle's Tino Livramento, Chalobah was chosen to take over as England's 27th player for the upcoming FIFA World Cup 2026.

Chalobah revealed how he almost screamed with joy after hearing the news from Tuchel himself, prompting him to immediately call his family and agent at dawn. "It's like a storm falling on my heart, but with so much joy," said Chalobah. Although he was not selected when the roster was first announced, Tuchel even joked to him that 'you are close', so he did not give up hope and continued to take care of his condition even on vacation.

Chalobah was supposed to run in Los Angeles but he had to cancel all plans—including getting a refund from the hotel he just kept joking about. It wasn't easy, especially since he had to immediately ask for new football boots from his sponsor after his pair were gifted at the end of the club season.

Before he was called to join the national team, Chalobah trained in New York and even played padel with Ivan Toney and Ezri Konsa to maintain physical condition. He even beat Konsa, who was also a direct competitor for the defense spot. Tuchel also openly said that it is possible to use him as a right-sided center-back, a position he knows from Chelsea days when Tuchel was also the coach.

The defender admitted that the Chelsea management was not always comfortable with him, but he was impressed with the number of games and return to form — 47 appearances last season. Now, he has realized his dream of playing in the World Cup, eight years since he "tweeted" that he would one day play on football's biggest stage.

For Chalobah, this is the biggest achievement in his career and an inspiration for athletes to keep dreaming. "It hasn't been easy, but every moment has been worth it. This call-up, it's unparalleled," said the Chelsea defense and England's new strength heading into the 2026 World Cup.
