Man City upset with expected Betway sponsorship of Man United

Some Manchester City staff have expressed frustration after news emerged that Betway is expected to become Manchester United's training-kit sponsor — a brand that became City's official partner in July 2024. Ferran Soriano, then chief executive of the City Football Group, announced their engagement with Betway as part of the betting firm's expansion into sports.

As Samuel Luckhurst of Sun Sport reports, United's deal is estimated to be worth around £20 million per year, and shows the Red Devils' intention to boost their commercial income after a period without a training wear partner. Betway's entry into United has not gone unnoticed at the Etihad, and it has caused a degree of irritation among some within City—not just because of the commercial details but because the long-time partners are now aligned with their city rivals.

There is some source of irritation at the view that Omar Berrada, the chief executive of Manchester United who came from City Football Group, is again following the steps taken by City in the past. Berrada served as City Football Group's chief football operations officer overseeing a network of teams on five continents before his move to Old Trafford in July 2024 following Sir Jim Ratcliffe's investment in United.

In a wider context, this training-kit deal is considered one of the biggest in football history, and comes as the Premier League bans front-of-shirt sponsorship for gambling companies from next season. Because of this, it is becoming more common for betting firms to switch to training wear for visibility.
