Everton's win against Newcastle is an important statement in their preparations for the upcoming Premier League season. On the other hand, Newcastle's loss served as a warning to their coaching staff about aspects of their game that still needed improvement.

Key Points

• Newcastle 1-3 Everton — Match Report and Highlights.
• Everton won 3-1 against Newcastle in the pre-season friendly at Murrayfield.
• Newcastle 1 - 3 Everton - Match Report & Highlights.

Everton put in a clear and effective performance to beat Newcastle 3-1 in a pre-season friendly at Murrayfield, a result that served as a warning to Newcastle fans as the start of the Premier League's new La Liga approaches. Goals from Thierno Barry, Iliman Ndiaye and Tyrique George sealed a comfortable win for the visiting side, while Harvey Barnes scored the final consolation for Newcastle. For coach Matthias Jaissle, the match gave a clear signal about the work that still needs to be done. In his second friendly as Newcastle manager, Jaissle witnessed how quickly a disorganized team can be punished — and that's what Everton showed when they were disciplined and organized in both phases of the game. Everton, under the style of manager David Moyes, showed defensive discipline and counter-attacking prowess. Their pressure and organization without the ball made it difficult for Newcastle and provided plenty of opportunities for the Toffees to finish off the counter-attack. Thierno Barry and Iliman Ndiaye performed well in the match, while Tyrique George also contributed significantly to the scoring. Newcastle's lineup showed structural change: they made 10 changes between the first and second half, a clear sign that the coach used the tournament as a test of the depth of his squad. Newcastle have shown promise at times but the successive arrivals of new players have also weakened their rhythm and connection to the game.

At Everton, Moyes liked the intensity, especially in their work without the ball. New arrival Hayden Hackney along with Barry and George matched the expected level of fitness and tactical awareness the coaching staff were looking for. As usual in the pre-season, the results do not always depict the total picture of a team entering the official competition. However, there is a clear difference between the two teams at Murrayfield: Everton are fitter and better prepared, while Newcastle still remain a project that needs to be built before the start of the league. The timing of the end of pre-season is crucial: Newcastle have just 11 days to go before their Premier League opener against Liverpool at St James' Park — a big challenge for Jaissle and his group. Meanwhile, Everton will go straight into their opener against Crystal Palace this coming Saturday, 22 August, carrying the confidence of their form at Murrayfield. Ultimately, Everton's win proves that they are ready to show strong discipline and effective collaboration. For Newcastle, there is a lot to sort out and it is clearly time to refine their identity before entering serious Premier League competition.

What's next

With their success, Everton hope to continue the momentum as they prepare for their first Premier League match against Crystal Palace. For Newcastle, the challenge will be to quickly build their team identity under Matthias Jaissle ahead of their own Premier League opener. The next friendly matches will be important for both teams to fine-tune their strategies and lineups.
