Context

Ousmane Diomande is a 22-year-old center-back from the Ivory Coast who currently plays for Sporting CP. Despite his young age, he has over 150 senior first-team appearances and has played for the Ivory Coast national team, including one World Cup appearance. His potential move to Nottingham Forest could give their defense a major boost in the Premier League.

Why it matters

Nottingham Forest's interest in Ousmane Diomande shows their desire to strengthen their defense in the upcoming Premier League season. As a 22-year-old Ivory Coast international, Diomande's experience in over 150 senior appearances, including his participation in the World Cup, gives him the valuable skills a Premier League club needs. Acquiring Diomande could be key to Forest avoiding relegation and improving their league position.

Sporting CP are said to have received an expression of interest from Nottingham Forest for their centre-back Ousmane Diomande. According to reports from Portugal, the Midlands club have shown an intention to sign the 22-year-old Ivory Coast international, but Forest are yet to make a formal offer. There is a release clause of £68.2 million in Diomande's contract, but sources say the value could be lower if Forest struggle this summer. The potential move is said to be being driven by new Nottingham Forest manager Oliver Glasner, who is reportedly interested in Diomande who also tried to sign him during his time at Crystal Palace. Despite his young age, Diomande's experience is remarkable — he has made more than 150 senior first-team appearances, including 15 games for the Ivory Coast national team and an appearance at the World Cup last summer. The Sporting back has previously been a target of Chelsea and has also been linked with various European clubs, so speculation about his next destination continues.

Nottingham Forest, who narrowly avoided relegation back to the Championship last season, are only beginning to rebuild their squad under Glasner. According to the report, they have no official new signings announced yet, but there has been movement in the other direction: they have reportedly sold midfielder Elliot Anderson for £116m and David Carmo has moved to Olympiacos for an undisclosed fee. For Sporting, the arrival of the inquiry is not a new sign that there may be teams monitoring Diomande's services. If the matter continues, it will likely open serious negotiations between the two clubs — as well as the player and his agent — to determine what value is fair and whether Sporting will be interested in releasing their centre-back before the end of the market. Reports will continue as the situation is monitored; pending an official bid or confirmation from Nottingham Forest or Sporting, the printed report remains an inquiry only. Diomande continues to look like one of the centre-backs in Europe who could cause significant competition in the market this summer.

What's next

Nottingham Forest are expected to continue their negotiations for Ousmane Diomande, especially since new manager Oliver Glasner has an interest in him. Although no official offer has been handed in, the situation could change if Forest struggle to land the centre-back. Reports from Portugal suggest that Diomande's release clause may no longer be an obstacle if Forest are more aggressive with their offer.
