Grimaldo has long been on Simeone's shortlist, and the Spanish international himself also wants a return to La Liga—with Atlético a clear priority.
Grimaldo came from Barcelona's academy and stayed there until 2016 before making a name for himself at Benfica from 2016 to 2023. He moved to Leverkusen where he won the German championship in 2024. An attacking left back, he recorded 30 goals and 45 assists in 145 official matches for the Leverkusen team.
On his return to Spain, Grimaldo is expected to bring experience and production from the side as Atlético Madrid strengthen their ranks for the La Liga campaign.
