Tottenham Hotspur have officially announced that Italian star Sandro Tonali will wear the No.16 shirt in their midfield for the upcoming 2026-27 season. The confirmation was released by Spurs on Monday which also reinforces Tonali's role as one of the team's most important signings for the next campaign. Tonali, trained as a midfielder, arrived from Newcastle United as the most expensive Italian footballer in the history of the sport. This transfer is considered to be Newcastle's second biggest sale and even surpasses his previous achievements at Milan where he was part of the squad that won Serie A in the 2021-22 season. In his typical career, Tonali wore the No.4 jersey for Brescia, and No.8 for Milan and Italy. But this time at Tottenham, the No.8 is not available as it is currently being used by Conor Gallagher. Because of this, Tonali was forced to choose a new number—the No.16—that would serve as a symbol of the new phase of his career in North London.

In his first interview with Tottenham's official website, Tonali revealed that he and head coach Roberto De Zerbi spoke for almost two hours before he finally accepted Spurs' offer. De Zerbi went on to praise his compatriot, calling him a "special player" and an important part of the team's plans for the future. Tonali has signed a six-year contract with Tottenham, keeping him at the club until 2032 and is expected to be key to Spurs' midfield for years to come. Tonali's arrival further boosts Tottenham's ambitions to compete in the Premier League and return to Europe's main stages. This is a big step as part of the formation and strengthening of the squad under the leadership of De Zerbi. Watch for how De Zerbi will use Tonali's versatility in running the midfield, especially as he is expected to be the center of the team's plays and transitions. Fans also have high expectations from Tonali after his successful stints in Serie A and the Premier League, and now begins another chapter in a new number for Tottenham Hotspur.

What's next

With his move to Tottenham, Tonali is expected to be a key part of the team's midfield this coming season.
