Xavi Hernández has officially been appointed as the new head coach of the Netherlands national team, a major step for the program after their failure to qualify for the 2026 World Cup. With this announcement, the Dutch FA put an end to speculation that another name—such as Roberto Martínez—could take the job. Instead, they chose the 46-year-old former Barcelona and Spain national team star to lead the next cycle until the 2030 World Cup. The decision comes weeks after the Netherlands' painful exit from the 32nd round of the North American tournament, where they were eliminated by Morocco on penalties. Under the expanded format of the World Cup 2026 with 48 teams and additional knockout matches, the challenge to the Oranje is clear: a new direction, fresher ideas and a clearer identity are needed in the next four years. Xavi has a wealth of experience as a coach since retiring as a player in 2019. He immediately moved to Al-Sadd in Qatar until 2021, before landing the coveted job at Barcelona from 2021 to 2024. At Camp Nou, he steered the club to another La Liga and Supercopa title in 2022/23—a testament to his discipline in positional play, ball control, and tenacity. which is foundational to tactical detail.

Xavi's appointment is also rooted in the long-standing ties between the Netherlands, Spain, and Barcelona—a line of football philosophy centered on ball-handling, structure, and bold build-up from the back. It is expected to be the pillar of his project to revive the courage and sharpness of the Oranje on the world stage. In the bigger picture, it is seen as a new beginning for the Netherlands, which continues to seek to return to the pinnacle of international competition. As the backroom staff and first appointments are sorted out for the next few months, Xavi's main aim is to restore confidence, improve organization in defence, and intensify the creation of chances in the final third of the pitch. The result at the international level is not immediate, but the direction is clear: the new coach will introduce a clear identity and system suited to the strength of the country's player pool. By selecting Xavi and signing until 2030, the Dutch FA is showing a long-term vision: build a program that can match and even surpass the best in the world. After the bitter memories of World Cup 2026, this is the reset button supporters have been waiting for—a new chapter that is expected to yield a more disciplined game and greater ambition in the coming years.

What's next

With the entry of Xavi, the Netherlands are expected to make changes in their tactics and roster to prepare the team for the upcoming matches. His aim is not only to recover from the defeat in Morocco but also to build a team with a clear identity and purpose. The next few years will be critical as the Oranje prepare for the World Cup 2026 and their qualifications to subsequent tournaments.
