Phil Foden has revealed that it is "exciting" for Manchester City to appoint Enzo Maresca as the team's new manager. According to the English star, the arrival of the Italian coach who replaced Pep Guardiola after a historic decade of dominance at the Etihad Stadium is positive and full of energy. Guardiola's era ended with him carving a new standard in English football: back-to-back campaigns at the top of the Premier League, dominance in domestic cups, and the coveted European crown. Under the systematic idea of positional play, Guardiola shaped City into a machine of control and attack. This move to Maresca, a coach also known for tenacious ball retention, progressive formation from the back, and high disciplinary standards, is seen as a natural continuation of the team's identity. Maresca, an Italian tactician, was also previously part of the backroom staff at the Etihad before succeeding in leadership at league level. He is known for shrewdly shaping the structure in the middle and for using inverted full-backs and creative but disciplined attacks—principles close to City's culture in recent years. As such, supporters will be hoping that they will not lose the control and style that has been the cornerstone of Manchester's blue side's success. Inside the dressing room, Foden's voice is important—a homegrown player who has become the face of a new generation at the Etihad. His positive reception signals early buy-in from the player core, something critical to a smooth transition. With leaders in the middle and back, City have enough experience and quality to support the ideas the new coach will introduce. The next step for Maresca is to adapt quickly: identify each player's strengths, ensure sharp pressing and defense in transition, and maintain a high standard of finishing in front of goal. He will also look to continue a deep campaign in the Premier League and Europe, where City are still expected to compete with their fiercest rivals. As Manchester City prepares for a new chapter, the message from within is clear: the key players are confident, and the project has a clear direction. How Maresca deploys his version of the positional system—and how quickly it adapts to the rhythm of the league—will be the measure of the first phase of his tenure. So far, the enthusiasm shown by Foden gives an early indication that City are ready for another assault on the titles.

What's next

With the entry of Maresca, it is expected to see a change in Manchester City's tactics, which could bring new vitality to their game.
