Contract until 2028 and no one has activated any options: that's the clear picture now on Marcus Rashford's future at Manchester United. Despite the vociferous rumours, the homegrown forward will remain at Old Trafford after clauses in his contract that could open the door to a permanent exit were triggered. According to information gathered, Rashford earns around £325,000 per week, making him the highest paid player at the club. This comes amid minority owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe's campaign to tighten control over the salary bill—United's biggest spending luxury. Part of Rashford's loan deal last season included Barcelona's option to make his move permanent for £26 million. As expected, the deadline passed in mid-June without the Catalan club activating it. Additionally, there is a separate clause in the forward's contract that allows other teams—other than Liverpool and Manchester City—to buy him for £40 million. It expired in early July and, as expected, no one triggered it. In the view of people close to the player, it is also illogical for a club to make an offer higher than the price set for Barcelona.

After England's World Cup campaign, Rashford is entitled to three weeks off. Unless there is a change in schedule or his situation, he is set to return to Manchester United by the time the team begins a six-day training camp in the Republic of Ireland. It was arranged in preparation for the historic showdown against Leeds in Croke Park on August 12—a match expected to provide a clear first look at United's direction in the new season. Changing dynamics in the dugout is also important context. Ruben Amorim had just arrived from Sporting Lisbon early, there was already a conflict between him and Rashford. This resulted in the forward being sidelined in the group and eventually in a loan move to Aston Villa. Currently, the helm is in the hands of Michael Carrick—Rashford's former teammate, coach, and short-term manager in 2021. The two are said to have a good relationship, and Carrick's only comment about Rashford at the end of last season was calmness—matching his personality as a leader. On the club side, the line is clear: no renegotiation with Barcelona for a lower fee and no plans for a second loan. United's consistent message this summer has been that they will not bow to pressure or overpay just to close deals. All in all, the color of Rashford's future remains red. With the options that could hasten a move closed, attention is now focused on his return to training and how Carrick will reintegrate him into Manchester United's attack. Unless there is a sudden change in the market, it seems that is where the story will turn in the coming weeks.

What's next

Rashford is expected to return to Manchester United after his three-week break, which coincides with the start of a pre-season training camp in the Republic of Ireland. His presence is vital as the club prepares for upcoming matches, including a historic match against Leeds. Despite talk of the transfer market, everyone seems focused on his development and contribution to the future of Premier League football under new management.
