FC Barcelona officially announced the signing of Rodri from Manchester City, and the supporters were quick to show their welcome — but in a strange way. Since Rodri reportedly doesn't have his own Instagram account, some fans decided to use superstar singer-songwriter Olivia Rodrigo's comment to leave a message of congratulations and support to the new signing. What transpired was a simple mistake of identity but produced a viral moment: the name 'Rodrigo' is both associated with Barcelona's new midfielder and the surname of the three-time Grammy winner. Additionally, Olivia Rodrigo and Barcelona already have a link from last season, when the club released a special edition jersey with the 'OR' logo as part of a collaboration with Spotify. According to the report, Olivia Rodrigo also released scarves, t-shirts, and alternate jerseys for the club — which are said to have helped significantly in revenue, and are believed to have raised around $29 million for Barcelona (this new number is just a report). Olivia Rodrigo was soon seen in public in Madrid in May, when she attended El Clásico at the Spotify Camp Nou — which ended in a 2-0 win for Barcelona while wearing the said Rodrigo jersey. These past associations are what made fans immediately focus on the singer's Instagram when Rodri's signature was revealed.

It is important to remember that the behavior of fans shows the intersection of modern culture: music, fashion, marketing and football are intertwined. Supporters took to social media to express their delight at the new midfield addition, Rodri — who is also known as the 2024 Ballon d'Or winner and 2026 World Cup Golden Ball winner, according to the official announcement. The move from Manchester City to Barcelona was one of the headlines of the transfer window holiday and clearly ignited emotions in the fanbase. As the Blaugrana look ahead to the new season, Barcelona are set to open their calendar against Elche on Sunday, August 23. Rodri's arrival is expected to provide added stability to Barcelona's midfield, and fans will be hoping to see his contribution to the club immediately. While this viral scene was funny and lighthearted, it's clear that the relationship between football clubs and pop culture will continue to be strong in the modern game — from jersey collaborations to fans' unexpected Instagram takeovers.

What's next

Rodri is expected to be part of Barcelona's lineup in their next La Liga matches, where his midfield ability will be key to their strategies. Supporters are eager to see how he will interact with other players and how he can help build a strong team. In the upcoming matches, Rodri can be seen contributing goals and assists, becoming a key part of their campaign.
