Preview: Longford vs Cobh Ramblers — Irish First Division play-off tie
Longford Town welcome Cobh Ramblers to Strokestown Road this Saturday, both chasing a place in the play-offs. Form check, important trends, and short predictions.
Two teams desperate for a place in the Irish First Division play-offs will go head to head when Longford Town take on Cobh Ramblers at Strokestown Road this Saturday.
Longford: consistency and defense are the question From last season's flop that ended in the play-offs, Longford are determined to take one more step this year. They came out last with an impressive 3-1 home win against Treaty United—a perfect tone for Saturday if they can continue. But they are yet to complete back-to-back league wins this season and the defense remains patchy. Since May they lost 0-2 to UC Dublin and since then have failed to record a clean sheet in six consecutive matches. In front of their own supporters, they were last to clean up the record at the end of April. Additionally, their last four league matches have produced a total of 13 goals—a sign of an open game at both ends.

They last recorded a comfortable 2-0 win at home to Kerry and go into the weekend in third place, tied with UC Dublin and with a chance of promotion. Their recent form has proved solid: three league wins in a row, with a score of 5-1 on aggregate, including a 2-1 win away to Treaty United on May 22. Cobh also have plenty of confidence heading into the visit of Longford—their last trip to Strokestown Road they won, 2-1, on February 21.
Things to watch out for
- Longford: 6 consecutive matches without a clean sheet; also no clean sheet at home since the end of April.
- Longford's last 4 league games: 13 total goals (both sides benefit).
- Cobh: 3 straight wins (aggregate 5-1); last match was 2-0 against Kerry.
- Cobh's last visit to Longford (Feb. 21): Ramblers won 2-1.
Prediction With the amount of goals in Longford's last matches and the strength of Cobh's current form, it is possible that the game will be open and there will be two or more goals in total. The momentum is partly with Cobh, but Longford have a match on home soil and the inspiration to climb into the play-offs. Expect a close and spirited battle at Strokestown Road.
