Why it matters

Rodri's decision to make his move to Real Madrid known has a huge impact on Manchester City, who are currently focused on keeping their key midfielder. Despite his contract until 2027, his rejection of new offers exposes the potential for change in City's midfield.

The report that Rodri, Manchester City's main midfielder and world champion with Spain, has announced his desire to move to Real Madrid has sparked a huge debate in the transfer market. According to journalist and well-known insider Ben Jacobs, the 28-year-old player has informed the City management of his intention to go to Madrid this summer, based on sports and family reasons. It's not yet an official move from either club, but it's clear from the report that Manchester City are trying to convince Rodri to stay. He is still under current contract until June 2027, so the Premier League champions hold formal control of the situation. However, without a new deal, the midfielder will become a free agent after a year, something that increases the pressure on all parties if negotiations take place in the coming weeks. It has also been reported that Rodri has rejected all of Manchester City's new contract offers. During his time in England, he has played 298 matches in all competitions, with 28 goals and 32 assists — testament to his influence as a central pillar of midfield. According to data from the portal Transfermarkt, his current market value is estimated at €50 million.

For Real Madrid, who continue to build the next generation of their midfield backbone, Rodri's arrival—if successful—will add solid protection in front of the defense and control the rhythm of the game. As for Manchester City, this will possibly be the biggest issue the team will face in the summer, especially if the combination of defense, distribution, and being a clutch player that Rodri has contributed for a long time cannot be replaced. The Spaniard's reputation grew even brighter after the 2026 World Cup, where he played eight matches for the Spanish national team, won the title of world champion, and was recognized as the best player of the tournament. The award cemented his status as one of the most important midfielders on the world stage. For now, the direction of his next move remains up for debate. There has been no formal announcement from Real Madrid or Manchester City regarding a concrete deal. But it is clear that, if the sides agree, this could be one of the biggest events of the transfer window with a direct impact on the Premier League and La Liga this summer.

What's next

As the summer transfer window approaches, Manchester City are expected to be more active in talks with Rodri to keep him in their ranks. If City are unsuccessful in their efforts, the opportunity could open for Real Madrid to land the midfielder, bringing further tension to the transfer market. This situation could affect the player development of Rodri, who has a big role in the future of both clubs.
