Roma are stepping up their move in the transfer market to land Givairo Read, who is regarded as one of the most promising young players in Europe. According to the report, the Giallorossi have already tabled a €25 million offer—higher than Nottingham Forest's €21 million—as a clear statement of intent to outbid their Premier League rivals and bring the born-in-2006 player to Trigoria. However, the biggest challenge for Roma lies not in the transfer fee, but in the matter of wages. La Gazzetta dello Sport reports that Nottingham Forest and Read's camp have agreed a €4 million-a-year deal. This is the main obstacle for Roma, who now have to resolve how to match the compensation offered by the English club. The Giallorossi see two paths: first, raise their offer and honor the €4M annual salary; or secondly, convince Read to accept a lower package of between €2.8M to €3M per year. In this game of numbers and belief, Roma hope that they have a rock-solid attraction that is not only measured in money: participation in the Champions League and the clear plan of their European project.

Promising exposure in continental tournaments is important for any young talent. This time, Roma show that they are ready to position Read in a setup with a high level of competition and a clear development path. As for Nottingham Forest, the advantage is typical of many Premier League clubs: ability to offer higher wages and stable compensation, something not easily matched in Serie A. There is no final agreement at the moment, but it is clear what is happening: a fierce competition in the market between Roma and Nottingham Forest for the signature of a 2006-born prospect. While the starting position has not changed—Roma's offer is €25M against Forest's €21M, and England's salary target is €4M per year—the next few days will be critical negotiations. Roma will remain focused on the opening to lure Read with the Champions League and the promise of a first-team role; on the other hand, Forest are hoping that the money they are willing to shell out will be the spark-killer in the conversation. All in all, Read's decision will likely boil down to the competitive wages in the Premier League and Roma's European platform and project. Whatever direction the player's camp chooses, there is a clear message that these two clubs are ready to toughen up for the future of a young talent. See which will prevail—the weight of the salary or the promise of a Champions League stage.

What's next

As the summer transfer window progresses, negotiations between Roma and Read's camp are expected to continue. The Giallorossi will have to decide whether to raise their salary offer or how they can demonstrate the benefits of a move to a Serie A club with European ambitions, which could affect the young player's decision.
