"I don't understand why Manchester United decided to let him go. He's always been very hardworking and generous with his work," said Rooney, who was full of praise for the Scot.

He added that at the time McTominay was released, he was one of the players you wanted to see week in and week out in the starting eleven because he always gave it his all — unlike some who often looked lackluster. "His presence is important for the team," said Rooney, noting that when McTominay was used in a higher position, he often scored important goals.
"When Manchester United chose to let him go, my question was: 'What's going on?!'" added Rooney. "Now, I'm honest — I'd be happy to see him wear the red United shirt again."
