Ruben Dias caused fear in Portugal; trained separately before the first World Cup 2026 match against DR Congo

Manchester City centre-back Ruben Dias trained separately at Portugal's camp in Texas. He was monitored by the medical staff and underwent muscle activation and beach recovery as the first match in DR Congo approached.

The condition of Ruben Dias caused brief panic in the Portugal camp after the Manchester City centre-back was seen separated from the main group during their training session in Texas ahead of the 2026 World Cup.

As coach Roberto Martínez presides over Portugal's final preparations for the 48-team North American tournament, it was noted on Sunday that Dias was the only individual program player. According to reports in Portugal, he is being closely monitored by the national team medical staff as part of a controlled recovery and muscle activation.

Although there were initial concerns, Dias was also reportedly able to return to light activity with the team. This includes muscle activation at the team hotel and a beach recovery session in Palm Beach, as a measure to ensure he is in good shape before the opening campaign.

Heading into their first match against DR Congo in Houston, Portugal remain wary of minute management by the key defensive centre. There is no official word yet on whether he will be included in the starting XI, and the decision is expected to be based on how the player feels and the medical team's recommendations as the match approaches.

Dias' presence at the back is important for Portugal, but the camp has ensured that health and a long tournament are priorities. Martínez adjusts his formation and personnel selection to remain competitive regardless of the final state of his main defender.
