Signori mourns Protti: "Lost a great friend — we used to be invincible"

Today football lost a great man and I also lost a great friend.

"Today football lost a great man and I also lost a great Friend." This is how Giuseppe Signori began his emotional remembrance of Igor Protti after the news of the latter's passing at the age of 58.

Signori mentioned that he and Protti were together in the Lazio team in the 1996/1997 season: "We ran, sweated, scored goals and dreamed together" — he described the bonding of the two players inside the locker room. Signori added that they had talked on the phone a few days before and he found it hard to believe that the endless talks, laughter and celebration of goals that they used to share were gone.

In his Instagram post, Signori declared: "Rest in peace, my friend. I will always carry you in my heart — just like when we seemed invincible. A big hug wherever you are." The post included a photo showing them together during their Lazio days.

Signori's statement was part of an outpouring of grief from former teammates and supporters who mourned the loss of a prominent Serie A player. Moments of triumph and celebration as a team will remain in the memory.
