Tracked: USA and Mexico Enter Knockout Stage of World Cup 2026; Know the Teams In and Out
The USA and Mexico have advanced to the next stage of the 2026 World Cup after dominating their groups. Here's an update on who is involved and who has been removed.
As Matchday 2 of the World Cup 2026 continues, the picture of the teams that will enter the Round of 32 is gradually becoming clearer. Two of the tournament's three co-hosts, the United States and Mexico, have already secured their ticket after topping their respective groups and are certain to advance to the knockout stage.
Canada, on the other hand, has four points from the first two matches and will face Switzerland on Wednesday to determine who will win Group B.
A total of 32 teams will advance to the knockout round from the group stage: the top two in each group and eight best third-place teams.
According to FIFA, the ties will be divided as follows if the teams are equal: 1. Most points in the match by the teams involved 2. Highest goal difference in the match between those involved 3. Most goals scored in all the matches involved
If still tied, take precedence: - Highest goal difference in all matches - Most goals in all matches - Highest team conduct score (based on yellow and red cards)
And if there is no clarity, the latest FIFA Men's World Ranking will be used.
Eligible Teams in Round of 32: - United States — Winners against Paraguay and Australia, recorded a win in Group D, and will await the third-placer from Group B, E, F, I, or J for the knockout match on July 1 in Santa Clara, California. - Mexico — Clean record in Group A after beating South Africa and South Korea. They will play against third-place teams from Group C, E, F, H, or I on June 30 at Estadio Azteca, Mexico City.
Teams Eliminated: - Haiti — In their return to the World Cup from 1974, they still failed to get their first win after losing against Scotland and shutout Brazil. They will finish the match against Morocco. - Türkiye — Expected to contend for the Group D title, but back-to-back losses to Australia and Paraguay knocked them out. They will face the US in the final match.
New Knockout Stage System: FIFA implemented this change to keep the match balanced and not have the two highest ranked teams face off immediately before the finals if they both win the group. For example, Spain (highest in ranking) and defending champion Argentina (second), France (3rd) and England (4th) have different paths. They are sure to meet in the semifinals if they both win the group.
