Southend United have confirmed the signing of Rico Richards from Port Vale, for an undisclosed fee. The 22-year-old midfielder signed a two-year contract with a club option for a third year—a setup that gives the Shrimpers flexibility should his game continue to rise in the coming seasons. Richards is coming off a year where his minutes were limited at Walsall, where he made just one start in League Two during a loan spell. However, he already has experience on a higher stage as part of the Stockport County squad that won promotion to League One in 2023-24, where he made 11 league appearances. It shows he has had a taste of competition against teams with promotion ambitions, a valuable experience he can take to his new spell at Southend. In his first statement after the move, Richards described his respect for Southend head coach Kieron Dyer. According to the interview published on the Shrimpers website, he watched Dyer when he was growing up as a young player and believes he can learn a lot from the former veteran midfielder who is now on the touchline as a coach. That kind of relationship between player and coach is essential to a quick adjustment, especially for a youngster like Richards looking for consistent minutes and a clear role at center.

For Southend, the addition of Richards strengthens the competition in midfield and provides a younger option in the rotation. Although the transfer fee was not disclosed, it was clearly an investment in potential: aged 22, with glimpses of promotion success, and hungry for a chance to shine. The club option for a third year is also an indication that Southend are open to keeping him long-term if the form suits Dyer's system. In the context of his track record, Richards' profile suggests a dynamic midfielder who has been through a variety of challenges in the EFL—from limited time at Walsall to being part of a successful group at Stockport County. The next step is how he can translate those lessons into more consistent performances in the new environment. Expect Southend to be focused on his integration in pre-season and building a connection with the centre-backs, while Dyer looks to strike a balance between experience and youth in his midfield line. While neither side shared details about the exact amount, the message is clear: this is a targeted acquisition to deepen the team. If Richards can show stability and work through the middle, it could be one of the quiet but important pieces to Southend's ambitions this coming campaign.

What's next

Upon his arrival, Richards is expected to be seen contributing in Southend United's next matches in League Two. His relationship with Kieron Dyer, the head coach, could have a positive match impact on his development as a player. The next weeks will be important for him to earn the trust of the coach and get the necessary minutes on the pitch.
