Sunderland among suitors for Celtic's Arne Engels: good option for Le Bris?

According to a report by Tuttomercatoweb, Sunderland are among the teams trying to sign Celtic midfielder Arne Engels this summer. The race for the Wearside club will not be easy as they face Nottingham Forest, Fulham and Napoli in the race for the 22-year-old Belgian's signature.

Engels shone at the heart of Celtic's midfield last season in the Scottish Premiership, where he made 46 appearances in all competitions, with 7 goals and 8 assists. He's regarded as one of the best central midfielders in Scotland at the moment—so it's no wonder he's been courted by many this off-season.

Engels is still under contract at Celtic Park until the summer of 2028, something that could make any potential deal for Sunderland this year expensive.

In style of play, Engels is aggressive in tackling and good at winning the ball back in his own half. He does not hesitate to clear the danger when needed, and has the ability to contribute to the creation and development of goals. He is primarily a box-to-box midfielder, but he can also be used on the right—as a wide player or even a right-back—depending on the team's needs.

The question remains how quickly he can adapt to the physical game and high intensity of the Premier League should Sunderland sign him this summer. However, he is expected to add quality and depth to head coach Regis Le Bris' midfield, and is capable of challenging for a regular starting spot at the Stadium of Light for years to come.

At age 22, Engels' future is bright if his game continues to elevate each season. All in all, he looks like a solid option for Sunderland in the current transfer window—but he needs to be given time to prove himself at the highest level.
