Context

Álvaro Carreras is a young left back currently playing for Real Madrid. His progress at the club has underlined his value, especially in recent weeks where he has been Xabi Alonso's main target for Chelsea. His current situation shows the challenges players face in the transfer market, especially when there are offers from Premier League clubs.

Why it matters

Álvaro Carreras' situation presents challenges in the transfer market this summer transfer window, especially for Premier League clubs attempting to strengthen their squads. Xabi Alonso's interest in him suggests he is considered an integral part of his Chelsea project, which aims to build a strong defence. Despite the player's desire to stay at Real Madrid, his potential move could have a major impact on both clubs.

Key Points

• Report: Xabi Alonso targets Real Madrid's Álvaro Carreras for.
• It has been reported in Spain that Xabi Alonso is a priority for Álvaro Carreras for Chelsea.
• Alvaro Carreras remains central to Real Madrid's plans.

Left-back Álvaro Carreras is again at the center of transfer talks, after SPORT (via Bernabeu Digital) reported that Real Madrid defender Xabi Alonso remains Chelsea's main target for Chelsea. According to the report, since he took the helm in London, Carreras has been lined up as a key signing, and interest is said to have intensified when Marc Cucurella moved to Real Madrid. Chelsea reportedly need to strengthen the left side of the defence, and Carreras has been at the top of Alonso's list in recent weeks. However, Real Madrid's approach to the Premier League club is clear: they are not ready to listen to offers for the young Spaniard. There are even hints that only proposals of around €50 million could shake Los Blancos' position. Despite this, it is said that Alonso is not closing the door and it is possible that Chelsea will still try the asking price if there is a chance.

Real Madrid's stance is getting stronger since they recently sold Fran García, so they don't want to reduce their depth at left back this summer. Furthermore, the biggest obstacle for Chelsea is said to be Carreras' own desire: he wants to stay in Madrid, just a year since his arrival and has the belief that he can prove himself at the Bernabeu. The former Benfica left-back arrives with a reputation as one of the most promising in Europe, although he did not claim a regular starting spot last season. With the arrival of Cucurella, it is said that his rank in the position decreased even more. In the report's view, a move to Chelsea could open up Carreras' chance to become a definite starter under a coach who has strong faith in him. On the contrary, if he stays at Madrid, he is expected to play a secondary role behind Cucurella, who has been drafted in to be the first choice on the left. So far, there has been no official confirmation from the clubs regarding any new offers or formal negotiations. What is clear, based on reports in Spain, is that Xabi Alonso remains determined to try to bring Álvaro Carreras to Stamford Bridge, with Real Madrid asserting their interest in keeping the Español defender and the player insisting he wants to fight for his place at the Bernabeu. In the coming weeks, expect a clearer direction as to whether a concrete move from Chelsea will be floated or if the door to Madrid remains closed.

What's next

Currently, Chelsea could prepare an offer close to Real Madrid's €50 million demand to test their resolve. Should Chelsea succeed in signing Carreras, it would be an important midfield signing that would help them in their quest to keep pace with Premier League football. However, Carreras' decision to stay in Madrid could put a damper on any potential move.
