The ultimate goal in any FIFA World Cup is to lift the trophy as a team. But there are individual awards that are also up for grabs — including the prestigious Golden Ball for the tournament's best player. The Golden Ball was first introduced in 1982 and has since served as a mark of excellence on football's biggest stage. At the World Cup 2026, Rodri wrote a new chapter: he was the first Spanish player to win the Golden Ball. The Manchester City midfielder has been the backbone of La Roja's campaign, bolstered by a defense that has been virtually unflappable — they have conceded just once in the entire tournament. With the edition now expanded to 48 teams, the competition has become more intense and the standards for this award have been higher. Here are all the Golden Ball winners from 1982 to 2026: 1982 — Paolo Rossi (Italy) First official Golden Ball winner. Rossi was key to Italy's third championship, and starred in key matches until they defeated West Germany in the final. 1986 — Diego Maradona (Argentina) Maradona steered Argentina to a second title, capped by a 3-2 win over West Germany in Mexico. He finished with five goals and five assists, including the famous "Hand of God" and the subsequent "Goal of the Century" in the quarterfinal against England. 1990 — Salvatore Schillaci (Italy) The first Golden Ball winner who didn't win a championship. Italy cruised to third place, while Schillaci contributed six goals and one assist to their campaign. 1994 — Romário (Brazil) Star in Brazil's fourth crown. In USA '94, Romário took the Golden Ball after the Seleção prevailed against Italy on penalties, 3-2. 1998 — Ronaldo (Brazil) The 21-year-old Ronaldo won the Golden Ball even though Brazil failed in the final against France, which won its first title. Ronaldo scored four goals and had three assists — he was also the youngest winner of the award.

2002 — Oliver Kahn (Germany) Only goalkeeper to win the Golden Ball. Germany advanced to the final before losing to Brazil, 0-2. Before the final, Kahn had allowed just five clean sheets and three total goals. 2006 — Zinedine Zidane (France) France returned to the final but lost to Italy on penalties, 5-3. Zidane still picked up the Golden Ball after three goals and one assist in six games, although his red card stuck with him for headbutting Marco Materazzi in the final. 2010 — Diego Forlán (Uruguay) Forlán led Uruguay to fourth place and won the Golden Ball with five goals and one assist — a first for the country. 2014 — Lionel Messi (Argentina) Messi's first World Cup final was held in Brazil, where he was recognized as the best of the tournament despite failing to beat Germany. He finished with four goals and one assist. 2018 — Luka Modrić (Croatia) Modrić led Croatia to its first ever final, before falling to France, 2-4. The midfield maestro has two goals and one assist in seven games in Russia. 2022 — Lionel Messi (Argentina) History in Qatar: Messi is the first player to win the Golden Ball more than once. In their historic campaign, he recorded seven goals and three assists. 2026 — Rodri (Spain) First Spaniard to bring home the Golden Ball. His control and intelligence in midfield set the tone for Spain's campaign, a team that conceded just one goal in the entire tournament. In every edition of the World Cup, the Golden Ball is a reflection of talent and influence in the game. From Rossi and Maradona to Messi and Rodri, the shape of winning football is clearly changing — but the value of leadership, quality in long minutes and the ability to decide a match in the most crucial moments remains.
