With the arrival of the FIFA World Cup 2026 which will be held for the first time in the US, Canada, and Mexico, the dynamic of the group stage battle will change again. For example, in 1998, Colombia progressed to third place in the group with only three points and a -2 goal difference. In 2002, Portugal had three points and a +2 goal difference to enter. In 2010, Ivory Coast also recorded three points and a +1 goal difference. But in 2022, it was even tighter—there were three third-placed teams with four points each and equal goal difference. This shows that while it is possible to go in with three points, goal difference plays a big role in hope.
Due to the expansion of the group from eight to 12, the range of possible points and goal differences will also expand. In the past seven editions, there have been 13 third-placed teams that have earned three points but failed to advance to the next round. So BBC Sport experts advise, teams should not settle for just three points; A good goal difference must also be ensured to increase the chances of entering the Round of 32 in the World Cup 2026.
