Norway makes history: first time in World Cup quarters

According to Tuttomercatoweb.

Context

Norway, led by Erling Haaland, showed exceptional ability in their match against Brazil, underscoring their potential as a World Cup 2026 club. Their previous defeats in the knockout stage, especially against Italy, allowed a new beginning, and their current success could be the beginning of a historic journey in the next editions of the World Cup.

Why it matters

Norway's win over Brazil was a historic achievement that underlined their progress to the 2026 football World Cup. It was their first World Cup quarter-final, giving fans new hope and proving that their generation is capable of keeping up with the best teams in the world. This victory could open up more opportunities for Norway in future tournaments.

Key Points

  • Norway writes history: first time in the quarters of the World Cup.
  • Norway, led by Erling Haaland, advanced to the quarters of the FIFA World Cup for the first time after overcoming Brazil in the Round of 16.
  • La miglior Norvegia di semper: prima volta ai quarti di un Mondiale. E tanta voglia di stupire.
Is this Norway's best generation yet? Of the many reasons to believe, the strongest is the history they wrote this FIFA World Cup: the Scandinavians defeated Brazil in the Round of 16 to enter the quarter finals for the first time. With this win, Norway has placed among the best eight in the world and will be waiting to see if Mexico or England will face them next to carve their name even deeper in the tournament. The knockout stage has been a nightmare for Norway for a long time — and Italy usually end their dreams with the name Italy. The two times they reached the last 16 in 1938 and 1998, the Azzurri sent them home in tight scores (2-1 and 1-0), both on French soil. In 1994, in the group stage alone, Italy stopped their progress. It's a different story today: Italy are not in Norway's way, and according to the qualification record, Norway even won the double that sent the Azzurri through to the playoffs. This time, the previous curse disappeared and the Norwegian marched into the room.

Since 1998, Norway has not been to a World Cup — six editions that have been watched from the sofa. But behind the long wait, their federation laid out a series of reforms: youth development, strengthening the local league system, and shaping a more modern identity of the game. Now, the fruit is visible. They have a star who truly changes the scales in the person of Erling Haaland — the elegant centre-piece who can tear apart a defense in a split second of space. But it's important to remember: it's not just about one person. Haaland is surrounded by players skilled at the highest level in Europe — technical, disciplined, and organized — who give the team depth and balance. Against Brazil, Norway showed a solid backbone: solid at the back, smart in the middle, and clinical when there was an opportunity in front of the goal. That's the formula that often succeeds in tournaments — it doesn't have to be dominant all the time, just effective and right when it's needed. Next time, Mexico or England will be on the road. No matter what opponent appears, Norway are confident they can keep up. No more weight of past failure, no shadow of Italy, and a new identity molded by years of preparation. They have the momentum and hunger to continue harassing the giants. If this is indeed the best Norway in history, they are proving it with every passing minute at the World Cup.

What's next

Now, Norway awaits their next match, where they will face the winner between Mexico and England. Their progress to the quarters has given a good outlook for their season outlook in the World Cup 2026, and it may bring more confidence to their team. The next match will be crucial not only for their tournament ambitions but also for their reputation in global football.
