Germany Defender Nico Schlotterbeck's World Cup Ends With Serious Ankle Injury

After sustaining an ankle injury, Nico Schlotterbeck of Germany and Borussia Dortmund will be out for several months, causing him to miss the remainder of the 2026 World Cup.
The German camp is in serious trouble after it was confirmed that Nico Schlotterbeck will not play for the rest of the FIFA World Cup 2026 due to an ankle injury. Schlotterbeck suffered an ankle ligament injury midway through their 2-1 win against Ivory Coast, ruling him out of the team for several months.
Schlotterbeck has trained to be an integral part of Julian Nagelsmann's World Cup plans. He has shown solidity in defence, having made 28 playing appearances and helping Borussia Dortmund's 11 clean sheets in the Bundesliga this past season.
Schlotterbeck started Germany's first two games â victories over Curacao (7-1) and Ivory Coast (2-1). But he had to be replaced by Antonio Rudiger in the second half of the game against Ivory Coast after feeling severe pain in his left ankle.

It has been confirmed from the German Football Federation (DFB) that Schlotterbeck has suffered damage to the medial ligament of his left ankle and this will result in him missing several months. Despite this, he will remain with the team in the United States to continue to support and give strength to the comrades.
According to coach Julian Nagelsmann, "We will miss Schlotti on the field as an exceptional defender, especially with his good build-up play. This could have been his tournament. It's good that he still has a positive outlook despite the injury and will remain in the group." Nagelsmann added, Germany's central defense consisting of Jonathan Tah, Antonio Rudiger, Waldemar Anton, and Malick Thiaw is still strong.
Germany are certain to win Group E and are looking forward to their match against Ecuador this Thursday. After that, they will face one of the eight best-placed third-placers in the round of 32 in Boston on June 29.
