Zobnin: I haven't watched a full World Cup 2026 game; some teams are weak

Spartak Moscow captain Roman Zobnin admitted he hasn't watched a single FIFA World Cup 2026 match, was surprised by Belgium's result against Iran, and hailed Lionel Messi's hat-trick while saying the former format was more interesting.
Roman Zobnin, captain of Spartak Moscow, has admitted that he has not watched a single full match at the FIFA World Cup 2026, although he continues to monitor the results. According to the report of Championat by correspondent Ilya Nikulnikov, Zobnin said that he was surprised that Belgium did not get a win against Iran.
"I've been following the results. I'm surprised that Belgium didn't win against Iran. On the positive side, Messi's hat-trick was remarkable," said Zobnin, who also said he took a week off and flew to Turkey before returning to the team.

He added that the previous format of the World Cup was more interesting for him because the level of the teams was higher then. "Today, it's still interesting, but there are some teams that are weak," he said, praising that "yesterday, Iran showed strong resistance."
Zobnin's statement underscores the ongoing discussion regarding the expanded format of the World Cup 2026, with more teams and a longer tournament. Although he didn't watch the entire match, he was clearly following the course of the competition and the main stories—including Lionel Messi's impressive record and the surprising result between Belgium and Iran—closely.
