Erling Haaland Makes World Cup Debut; Norway Defeated Iraq, Sprinklers Caused Strange Scenes at Gillette Stadium

Erling Haaland scored twice in his first World Cup match to lead Norway to a 4-1 victory over Iraq, while a sprinkler malfunction provided another story at Gillette Stadium.

Norway dominated their first match at the FIFA World Cup 2026 after defeating Iraq, 4-1, where Erling Haaland became a feature who immediately made his first World Cup appearance. In the 29th minute, Haaland immediately scored from David Moller Wolfe's excellent pass from the left flank, scoring with his left foot in front of Iraqi goalkeeper Jalal Hassan.

Iraq did not let up when Aymen Hussein recovered for 1-1. But Norway had another chance when Hassan attempted a clearance that hit Haaland and slotted in for their second goal.

It wasn't just the action that thrilled the audience; A sprinkler on the side of the penalty box also exploded at halftime, causing the stadium staff to urgently repair the field.

After a second, the clash continued but Norway eventually completed the win. Leo Ostigard first hit a header from Martin Odegaard's corner kick, before Hussein, who scored an own goal, added the fourth goal. Haaland still led this last goal.

Although Haaland scored twice, he has yet to match the hat-trick that Miroslav Klose scored on his debut in 2002. However, Haaland showed his natural team instincts, constantly threatening the Iraqi defence.

The match was also colorful with support from Norwegian fans who showed off their 'ro' dance movement—a simultaneous action accompanied by shouting in support of their team, which started during the friendly match against Switzerland.

All in all, Norway made an impressive start, led by their performance from Manchester City, and climbed to the top of the group table ahead of France. The next matches between Haaland and Norway will certainly be looked forward to in the coming days of the World Cup.
