Everton have appointed Scott Phelan as permanent head coach

Scott Phelan started as interim and is now officially the permanent head coach of Everton after a good start in the Barclays Women's Super League.

Everton have officially appointed Scott Phelan as the permanent head coach of their women's team, according to the club's official statement released to WSL Full-Time this afternoon.

Phelan took charge of Everton on an interim basis in early February after former coach Brian Sørensen was sacked. The 38-year-old coach registered four wins from eight league games during his time in charge, and guided Everton to eighth place in the Barclays Women's Super League table.

Having made a good impression on the management, Everton gave Phelan the permanent position.

In his statement after the announcement, Phelan said he was very proud of the new role. "I'm not taking this lightly — I'm very proud to be given this opportunity. I've had a long association with Everton and to have the opportunity to lead our Women's team as head coach is something I'm not taking for granted. I'm excited and eager for the next steps."

Phelan also shared his long association with the club: "I started at Everton when I was eight at Bellefield, the old training ground. I stayed at the Academy, turned professional when I was 17, and was released at 19. I continued to play until I was 24 and then had the opportunity to come back as a coach at the Academy with the boys. I slowly moved up through the different age groups from 10 to 18. Now, I've been given the opportunity to work with our Women's team and it's a fantastic opportunity. We want to move forward and try to get Everton Football Club back to where we believe it belongs — at the top of the league."

The club said Phelan will be supported by Phil Jevons in the new role, while further backroom staff appointments are expected to be announced in the near future.
