Seattle shines in the World Cup: United States defeats Australia, enters the Round of 32

Seattle received a warm welcome as the host city of the World Cup 2026, along with the United States' 2-0 win against Australia and a ticket to the Round of 32.

SEATTLE — Seattle showcased its prowess as the host city of the 2026 World Cup with the United States' emphatic 2-0 win over Australia, giving the USMNT a spot in the Round of 32. At the head of “Seattle Stadium” — Lumen Field, which has temporarily been stripped of its sponsor's name for the tournament — attendance reached 66,925 as the excitement inside and outside the venue was palpable.

The city didn't just shine on the athletic stage. Since dawn, fans have flocked to the waterfront area of Pier 62 for the watch party, featuring a floating pitch on top of a barge. Pioneer Square is like a festival just a few minutes walk to the stadium. The events were all at once: a Juneteenth celebration, a Seattle Mariners game against the Boston Red Sox in the evening, the docking of three cruise ships, and about 10,000 Australians cheering for the game. With June's rare perfect weather—warm and sunny—the celebration flared up.

Seattle's World Cup curtain-raiser opened earlier on Monday with Belgium and Egypt, but excitement levels rose even further when the United States team visited on Friday and ensured their progress to the knockout stage. For many Seattleites, it was the fulfillment of a three-decade dream of becoming a major force in global soccer.

Local infrastructure and communities play a big role in reaching this moment. When the stadium opened in 2002—built under the leadership of late Seahawks owner Paul Allen—the potential to host the World Cup had already been squeezed into the plan. Fred Mendoza, chairman of the Washington State Public Stadium Authority, was key in framing the project as a football/soccer stadium to gain state support. "Fred was the 'Willy Wonka' of bringing the World Cup to Seattle," said Pete Fewing, former coach of Seattle University and a pillar of the local scene. He added, "I think the city needs this kind of stimulus."

Along with the growth of infrastructure, the organic growth of football culture. From the days when the Sounders were only held by the minor leagues, Seattle Sounders FC has been a model in MLS for a decade and more. "I cried on TV when it was announced that we were one of the host cities," said Adrian Hanauer, majority owner of the Sounders and one of the key figures in Seattle's transformation into a prominent soccer city in North America. "I've dedicated almost my entire adult life to this."

For Kasey Keller, former national team goalkeeper and son of the region—born in Olympia, about 60 miles south of Seattle—the game has long roots in the area. "I grew up here, part of a community where soccer was way ahead of most of America—50, 60 years ago," he said. “We see growth with the Sounders.”

Beyond the trophy, Seattle measures soccer's progress in the United States by the breadth of its supporter base, the strength of its immigrant community, and pockets of places that have long loved the game but are now more visible on the national map. And this Friday, the USMNT rode the wave of local culture—Seattle seemed like the perfect backdrop for a win that would fuel a deeper tournament campaign.

Even Hanauer admits to a strange sense of joy and excitement. "It would be a lie if I offered a prophetic answer," he joked, before pausing and searching for the right words. "And the next question: how can we bring the World Cup back again?"

All in all, June weather offers no guarantees in Seattle—but the city laid out a smart plan, from Pier 62 to the stadium, and it sparkled before the sun came up. With the United States' 2-0 win over Australia and the roar of 66,925, Seattle introduced itself not just as a venue, but as living proof of the growing American soccer heart.
